The Advanced Political Rights Workshop was successfully concluded on Friday, March 11. The workshop targeted a distinct group of CIHRS youth alumni.

The Workshop discussed a range of important topics related to the current phase Egypt is witnessing, such as freedom of association, the right to peaceful assembly and the right to freedom of opinion and expression, as well as justice and equality before the law.

The workshop discussed the types of political systems, the concept of the civil state and the right to political participation and the  guarantees for the integrity of the electoral process, followed by an overview of  experiences of the Egyptian parliamentary elections in 2005 and 2010, highlighting the abuses and human rights violations  that took place, and the role of popular participation through social media tools to create a general atmosphere of accountability by exposing corruption and human rights violations.

The participants in the working groups discussed their vision of political rights in Egypt in the future and conducted several case studies, including ‘Hisba’ and defamation of religions cases. They also were introduced to methodologies of documentation of human rights violations.

In an open panel discussion, participants discussed the proposed constitutional amendments and whether it is the ideal choice for the current situation, while presenting different views about them. The participants also examined the former Egyptian law on political rights and their vision about the necessary amendments to it, in order to comply with democracy and human rights requirements.  The Workshop was concluded with a simulation model of the Egyptian People’s Assembly, where the participants represented different Political Parties and discussed their proposed amendments of the law.

It should be noted that the graduates of this workshop will be the founders of the CIHRS Alumni Club, which will be launched next week under the title “Egypt’s youth for human rights”. It will include many activities such as symposia, seminars, campaigns and workshops organized by the alumni themselves under the support of the Human Rights Education program in CIHRS.
