Ambassador Ivan Surkoš, Head of the European Union Delegation to Cairo, hosted a luncheon yesterday, on Wednesday October 25th, in honor of Mohamed Zaree, Director of CIHRS’ Egypt office, who recently won the 2017 Martin Ennals Award, a prestigious international award for human rights defenders.

Honored guests of Zaree included the ambassadors of Belgium, Canada, Finland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

The Martin Ennals Award is dedicated to prominent human rights defenders who face great personal risks. Zaree was one of three finalists selected in April from among hundreds of human rights defenders globally. On October 10, 2017, at the awards ceremony in Geneva, Switzerland, the panel of ten judges representing major human rights organizations around the world announced it had chosen Zaree as this year’s laureate. Zaree could not attend the ceremony due to a travel ban from the Egyptian authorities imposed in May 2015.
