Morocco Should Halt All Restrictions Imposed on Civil Society and Free Imprisoned Human Rights Defenders

In International Advocacy Program by CIHRS

wafa_6_9.jpgYesterday, Tuesday 17 March 2015, the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS), the Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH), and Front Line Defenders delivered an oral intervention before the 28th session of the UN Human Rights Council, calling on the government of Morocco to halt all restrictions imposed on civil society and to free all human rights defenders imprisoned in the country, in accordance with the recommendations of the Equity and Reconciliation Commission and in respect to Morocco’s human rights pledges.
The intervention noted that despite the progress made by Morocco in the field of human rights, recent attacks against rights defenders and rights organizations cast serious doubt on the political will of the current government to uphold universal human rights standards. It further listed a few examples of the current restrictive practices and arbitrary measures taken against independent civil society in the country.
