Respect for Human Rights, the Rule of Law, and Accountability are the Only Way Forward to Combating Terrorism in the MENA Region

In United Nations Human Rights Council by CIHRS

Yesterday, the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) presented an oral intervention before the UN Human Rights Council. The intervention came as a response to the annual report of the UN Human Rights Commissioner for Human Rights covering the human rights situation around the world. CIHRS echoed the High Commissioner’s view that terrorism and extremist thought is fed by years of authoritarian policies and repression of human rights.

CIHRS stated that “decades of brutal authoritarian and totalitarian policies adopted by governments in Syria, Libya, Iraq, Yemen and elsewhere as well as failure of the international community to have the political will to act on the implementation of UN resolutions on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, serve as the primary recruitment tool of extremist groups”.

CIHRS stressed that accountability and respect for Human Rights and the Rule of Law are the only way forward in the fight against extremism and terrorism.
