The side event that was organized by the Cairo Institute for Human Rights (CIHRS) in partnerships with Amnesty International (AI), Human Rights Watch (HRW), and International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) witnessed the presence of 53 attendants amongst which attended representatives from the missions of US, UK, EU, Belgium, Norway, Denmark, Estonia, Sweden, Brazil, Italy, Netherlands, Australia, Check Republic, Switzerland, and Sudan. A representative of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and several regional and international organizations were also present.

Speakers and attendees discussed the situation of human rights defenders in Sudan and the reprisals against them. They also shed the light on the various human rights violations and abuses committed by the Sudanese National Intelligence Service (NISS) and the impunity with which the government and its various institutions operate – manifested clearly in relation to its situation with the International Criminal Court.

The Sudanese mission delivered a reply by acknowledging that there are some violations happening in Sudan. Nonetheless, it claimed that civil society institutions do not face problems operating in Sudan. The representative of the Sudanese mission further claimed that the government of Sudan extends an offer for international organizations visit Sudan, despite the several noted reprisals against civil society in the country. The response received much criticism from attendants.
