Human Rights Dissemination in the Arab Region

Objectives

The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) is seeking an editor for the Rowaq Arabi journal. The editor will be tasked with the overall responsibility for the production of the journal in Arabic. Rowaq Arabi offers up-to-date research and analysis of human rights dilemmas in the Arab region. The journal serves as an intellectual forum to voice the perspectives of Arab human rights defenders, researchers and academics on the main challenges and setbacks impeding the effective implementation of human rights standards.

Tasks

  • Proposing and developing annual publication plans for the journal;
  • Proposing themes, special issues and authors for the journal;
  • Maintaining a publication schedule for the journal and overseeing the editorial process;
  • Assigning and reviewing work, editing products as needed;
  • Liaising with authors, reviewers, and editors;
  • Corresponding with authors confirming their commitment, expected length of articles, format, and deadline for submission;
  • Screening and evaluating manuscripts and articles for publication;
  • Maintaining accurate records of manuscript progress from submission to final acceptance;
  • Contributing ideas for journal development and improvements;
  • Assisting in ongoing journal marketing and promotion via online campaigns and social media channels;
  • Updating journal webpages to highlight new journal content.

Requirements

  • Excellent written and verbal Arabic skills and English language skills;
  • Advanced degree in social sciences or legal studies;
  • Experience in human rights issues and extensive knowledge of political, economic, and social dynamics in the Arab region;
  • Ability to conduct research tasks and publication records in Arabic and English in relevant fields;
  • Experience working in similar positions is highly preferred;
  • Excellent communication skills; Ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in written and verbal format, and build and maintain relationships;
  • Excellent ability to work as part of a team;
  • Ability to work well under pressure, to adapt to emerging issues and changing priorities;
  • Willingness to work extra hours on occasion, sometimes during weekends, for overtime pay as the need arises;
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment;
  • Excellent creative, diplomatic, and interpersonal skills;
  • Detail-oriented;
  • Computer skills using a variety of software packages, such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, etc., to produce correspondence and documents and maintain presentations, records, spreadsheets, and databases.
