The Arab Protest Movements:
Bahrain and Yemen in Focus

The event will provide a focused discussion on civil society and protest movements in Yemen and Bahrain within the context of a global clampdown on civil society. The current situation in both of these countries has become of increasing concern but has been met by silence from the international community. This discussion with examine the origins of these citizen actions as well as inquire into the status of these actions at the present moment and what steps by the international community are needed. Key questions to be address are:
• What was the situation for civil society in Yemen and Bahrain in early 2011?
• What has taken place in Yemen and Bahrain since the start of citizen actions this year?
• How have the national governments responded?
• How have other governments worldwide responded?
• What steps by the international community at the UNHRC are being called for by civil society?
• What are the long-term prospects for civil society in Yemen and Bahrain?
