A vast research archive on human rights advocacy from 1996 until today
In late 2018, the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) launched the electronic journal Rowaq Arabi, a platform for researchers and rights advocates, which had begun publishing in 1996. CIHRS is now giving access to the full printed archive online, which contains more than 70 issues of the journal. This online archive will serve as an important destination and resource for researchers, academics and rights advocates interested in the human rights movement in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region – a rights movement for which Rowaq has served as one of its most notable intellectual platforms.
The journal’s re-release, and the electronic archival of all previous print issues, is a message of gratitude from the Rowaq Arabi family and CIHRS to the rich legacy built by prominent researchers, writers, and rights activists, some of whom are no longer with us. By documenting the significant intellectual and political discussions and debates on human rights in MENA countries, the archive affirms the intellectual legacy represented by these writings, and seeks continue to build upon and enrich this legacy.
The Rowaq Arabi journal, as a platform for rights advocates and researchers, seeks to understand the political, social, economic, cultural, and historical contexts, as well as international and regional factors, that influence respect for human rights. The journal offers in-depth discussions and analyses of human rights policies and developments in the Middle East and North Africa, utilizing approaches drawn from the social sciences, humanities, and law. It is also a space for the discussion of new developments related to international and regional instruments for the protection of human rights.
The current online archive features over 700 studies and analyses revolving around the most notable cases related to human rights, and ramified research files, written by hundreds of writers and researchers. In addition, the archive contains more than 250 of the most important documents issued by the regional and international human rights movement over the past two decades.
Rowaq Arabi was founded, and its philosophy articulated, by Egyptian researcher and intellectual Dr. Mohamed al-Sayed Said, who also co-founded CIHRS; he served as the editor of the journal until his death in 2009. Over the course of 20 years, the journal was issued through print publication, until its launch as an online platform in December 2018. Currently, the journal is pleased to publish the contributions of newer generations of researchers continuously throughout the year, and seeks to reach wider circles of readers interested in understanding local, regional and international human rights developments.
