The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) convened the 20th Regional Forum of the Arab Human Rights Movement in Tunis on September 12 and 13, 2016.The Forum addressed “Prospects in the Arab Region: Facing challenges of modernity, democratization, and opportunities for change.”
Manyrights advocates, academics, researchers, writers, politicians and media personalities from the region participated in the Forum. Bahey eldin Hassan, director of CIHRS, opened and moderated the first session of the Forum.
A number of participants presented several research papers, to be reviewed and discussed throughout the fiv sessions of the Forum. Their theses and discussions on future scenarios for reforming civil-military relations in the region, the future of political Islam between violent extremism and peaceful action, and how to end Sunni/Shiite sectarian conflicts in the Middle East.
The role of civil forces in reform scenarios was also addressed during the sessions, focusing on civil political parties and forces overcoming their failures during the different uprisings of the Arab Spring.
The Regional Forum of the Arab Human Rights Movement is an initiative first founded by CIHRS in 1999, aiming to create a platform for dialogue on the pressing issues of democratization, human rights, and the future of the human rights movement and the challenges of its work in the Arab reigon.
