The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) is honored to announce that three leading women human rights defenders have joined its Board of Directors: Amina Al-Marini, Bochra Belhaj Hmida, and Radhya Al-Mutawakel from Morocco, Tunisia, and Yemen respectively.
Amina Al-Marini is a pioneer of the women’s rights movement in Morocco; she is founder and President of the Democratic Association of Moroccan Women (ADFM), former member of the National Council of the Moroccan Organization for Human Rights, and former President of the High Authority for Audiovisual Communication (HACA). Bochra Belhaj Hmida is a lawyer and former Tunisian parliamentarian, chairperson of the Individual Freedoms and Equality Committee at the parliament, and former President of the Tunisian Association of the Democratic Women (ATFD). Radhya Al-Mutawakel is founder and Director of Mwatana Organization for Human Rights in Yemen.
CIHRS’ Board of Directors also includes Randa Siniora, Hanny Megally, and Driss el-Yazami. Randa Siniora is Director of the Women’s Centre for Legal Aid and Counseling (WCLAC), and former Executive Director of the Independent Commission for Human Rights in Palestine. Hanny Megally is a member of the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on Syria, and Deputy Director and Senior Fellow at New York University’s Center on International Cooperation. He is the former Director of the Asia, Pacific, Middle East, and North Africa Branch at the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva. Driss el-Yazami is the former President of the National Council for Human Rights in Morocco, the President of the Council of Moroccans Abroad, and the former Secretary-General of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH).
CIHRS’ Board of Directors is chaired by Kamel Jendoubi; former Chair of the United Nations Group of Eminent Experts on Yemen, former Tunisian Minister of Relations with Constitutional Bodies, Civil Society and Human Rights, and former member of the Higher Authority for Realisation of the Objectives of the Revolution, Political Reform and Democratic Transition in Tunisia. He was also the head of the independent body responsible for holding elections in Tunisia’s post-revolution National Constituent Assembly.
