On January 14th 2013, The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) concluded the tenth training workshop on “Promotion of Municipal Participation in the Defense of Human Rights” which lasted for five days.
The workshop explained human rights concepts and the Right to Political Participation on the basis of the Egyptian legislations, particularly the Right to Peaceful Assembly and to Freedom of Association. It also addressed a reading of the Egyptian Law on the practice of Political Rights.
The workshop discussed State political institutions, from the perspective of municipal councils, administrative organization, and the terms of reference and competences of each municipal council, their functions and system of operation, in addition to the rights of their members.
Civil society has been a major topic on the agenda of the workshop, which focused on the role of civil society in overseeing municipalities, and the relationship between civil society organizations and the state before and after the Revolution.
The workshop was overall keen to train participants on problem solving and planning, in order to manage and overcome crises which might accompany their collective work either in municipalities or civil society organizations in general, as well as offering several guidelines on communication skills; the formation and training of qualified personnel, coordination and teamwork, campaign designing and pressure groups.
The number of participants in this workshop was more than 20 trainees from Greater Cairo Governorates, whose ages ranged between 18 and 40 years.
