On the 19th of June, ARTICLE 19 and the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies along with more than 60 NGOs from around the world have urged the United Nations Human Rights Council to ensure “respect for the rights to freedom of expression and privacy” on the internet, and called for the condemnation of “the blocking of communications, including of social media, in Egypt, Malaysia, Pakistan, Turkey, and Venezuela” as “a violation of freedom of expression, association and assembly.”
