Press Conference of The Forum of Independent Human Rights Organizations

“Human Rights in Egypt In 100 Days”


 

The forum of independent human rights organizations in Egypt held a press conference on June 9th, 2010, 12:00 pm at the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information. The forum announced the report “Human Rights in 100 days”, two days prior to the issuance of the final report of the UNHRC June 11th.

The forum of independent human rights organizations in Egypt, which comprises 16 human rights institutions, in the report on human rights prepared on the performance and activity of the Egyptian government in 100 days 19/2/2010 – 1/6/2010, following the discussion of the governmental report at UNHRC said, “The Egyptian government has violated many of the 119 recommendations that it has accepted last February. The government has not taken any clear positive steps regarding torture recommendations and limiting the use of the emergency law against terrorism and drug trade.

Many prisoners of conscience and detainees over political activities are still not released. In addition, the government did not stop practices impeding of elections integrity. The government also wasted the recommendations to protect human rights defenders and persistently restricts the right to organize”.

 

The report, prepared by the forum, monitored human rights violations that occurred during 100 days elapsing between the UPR session and the issuance of the final report of UNHRC on June 11th, 2010 in the following aspects:

1. Freedom of opinion and expression, prepared by the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information.
2. Freedom of association in Egypt, prepared by the New Woman Foundation.
3. The rights of prisoners in Egypt, prepared by the Human Rights Association for the Assistance of Prisoners.
4. Shura Council elections and prepared by the Egyptian Association for the Advancement of community participation.
5. Chronicles of torture in Egypt, prepared by the El Nadim Center for Rehabilitation of Victims of violence and torture.
6. Violations of women’s rights and religious discrimination ,by the Andalus Institute for Tolerance and Anti-violence studies.
7. Freedom of religion and belief, prepared by the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights.
