Today, 1 September 2013, 35 Arab and International nongovernmental organizations, among them the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS), sent a joint letter to Dr. Nabeel El Arabi, the Secretary General of the League of Arab States (LAS) asking him to put current political developments in Egypt on the agenda of the upcoming Ministerial Council of the League on 3 September 2013.
The letter reiterates the call made by 22 Arab NGO on 29 August 2013 to the Arab League to form a thorough, independent and impartial fact finding mission under the auspices of LAS, as a neutral body.
The signatories expressed deep concern regarding recent events in Egypt and ongoing violence both by state security forces and supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood. Recent Human rights violations have lead to the death of over 1,000 individuals, thousands of injures, as well as damage to dozens of private property and state institutions.
In this context, the joint letter stressed the need for the Ministerial Council to discuss the formation of a fact finding mission on Egypt during its next meeting, especially in light of the conflicting claims by the various parties and the mounting rhetoric inciting to violence by all sides. The letter further added that the mission’s mandate should include measures to ensure accountability for human rights violations and stop escalation to the situation which would further risk Egyptian lives, property, livelihood and security.
