February 26th 2012, he Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) concluded the eleventh training workshop on “Promotion of Municipal Participation in the Defense of Human Rights” which lasted for five days.
The workshop explained human rights concepts and the Right to Political Participation on the basis of the Egyptian legislations, particularly the Right to Peaceful Assembly and to Freedom of Association. The workshop also addressed a reading of the Egyptian law on practicing the Political Rights. It also discussed State political institutions, using municipal councils as an introduction to the topic, and in terms of their administrative organization, the terms of reference and competences of each of them, their functions and system of operation, in addition to the rights of their members.
Civil society has been a major topic on the training agenda, which focused on the role of civil society in observing municipalities, and the relationship between civil society organizations and the State before and after the Revolution.
The workshop, In its entirety, was keen to train the participants on problem solving and planning, in order to manage and overcome crises which might accompany their collective work either in municipalities or civil society organizations in general. It also offered several guidelines on communication skills, the formation and training of qualified personnel, coordination and teamwork, campaign designing and pressure groups.
Worth mentioning, that the participants in this training workshop included members of the Popular Socialist Alliance party, Dostour (Constitution) Party, and the Egyptian Social Democratic Party, as well as activists from the Governorates of Sohag, Qena, and Luxor City. The age group of participants ranged between 18 and 40 years.
