US assistant secretary of state meets with human rights organizations

The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies hosted an open dialogue yesterday between Michael Posner, the assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights, and labor, and representatives from ten human rights organizations.. The 90-minute discussion touched on human rights concerns in Egypt and American human rights policy, particularly in Egypt and Palestine. The talk was attended by US Ambassador to Egypt Margaret Scobey.
Michael Posner is the former director of Human Rights First (formerly the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights), a distinguished organization in the field from which Mr. Posner has followed human rights developments in Egypt for more than 20 years and has had close contact with prominent human rights defenders in Egypt and the wider Arab world.
The open discussion was preceded by a 75-minute meeting between Mr. Posner and Bahey El Din Hassan, the director of the CIHRS.
